Old Age Home Visit – Jain Vrudhrashram 2024 | BLDEA'S College of Nursing, Jamkhandi

On July 18, 2024, third-year B.Sc. Nursing students of BLDEA'S College of Nursing, Jamkhandi, visited Jain Vrudhrashram, Jamkhandi, at 10:30 AM to conduct geriatric therapeutic activities. The visit provided a comprehensive learning experience for the students while delivering essential healthcare services to the elderly residents of the old age home. The activities were coordinated by Mrs. Rajeshwari Kambi, Mrs. Savita Ainapur, and Mr. Somesh Nikkam, PG Nursing Tutors, under the guidance of Dr. Veerabhadrappa Mendagudli, Principal.

Inauguration & Geriatric Assessment

The visit commenced with an orientation session conducted by Ms. Chandana Alagi, who introduced the students to the aim and objectives of Jain Vrudhrashram, its staffing patterns, admission policies, legal formalities, and the range of services provided to residents.

The geriatric and mental health assessment event was formally inaugurated with a ribbon-cutting ceremony by Dr. Veerabhadrappa Mendagudli, Principal of BLDEA'S College of Nursing, along with the residents. Subsequently, the students conducted comprehensive geriatric and mental health assessments for each resident. Based on their findings, medications including vitamins, calcium tablets, and joint pain ointments were distributed, and sterile dressings were performed as needed.

Health Care & Education Activities

Following the assessments, health education sessions were conducted by Ms. Laxmi N, Ms. Chaitra B, Ms. Dannama P, and Ms. Bhagyashree K, covering:

  • Healthy lifestyles and balanced nutrition
  • Prevention and management of hypertension and diabetes
  • Importance of exercise, rest, and adequate sleep
  • Stress management strategies for the elderly

The sessions were presented using health charts and educational materials in both Kannada and English, ensuring accessibility for the residents and their caretakers. Students also performed blood pressure monitoring and provided individualised guidance based on each resident's assessment findings.

Cultural Program, Special Lunch & Felicitation

To uplift the residents' spirits, the students organised a cultural program comprising a comedy skit, dance, and singing performances. A resident also joined in by singing, adding to the joyous atmosphere. The residents actively participated and expressed their appreciation for the students' efforts.

A special lunch was served by the students in the afternoon, which was highly appreciated by the residents. As a thoughtful gesture, socks were distributed to all residents, reflecting the students' care and consideration.

The visit concluded with a donation to Jain Vrudhrashram from Dr. Veerabhadrappa Mendagudli, Mr. Shantappa, and Mr. Mahesh, underscoring the institution's commitment to community welfare. Overall, the visit was a resounding success, providing valuable geriatric nursing experience while promoting health, well-being, and happiness among the residents.
